JOHARA SYKES-DAVIES BACKGROUND THE VERY BEGINNING This led me to Southampton to study for a B.A. in Maritime Leisure Management. While there I bought and old 5m kite which we played with on the Common and on the grass at Calshot Spit. I then moved to Canada for a year after finishing university. This allowed me to take my all mountain skiing to another level, travel to Alaska and then while working at the Squamish Windsports Society in British Columbia, learnt to kitesurf! THE KITING BUG HAS HIT! Sacrificing the next winter of snow, this new found passion took me to La Ventana on the California Baja in Mexico on a hunt for warm winter of kiting! The daily, steady wind allowed me to just ride around for hours a day to gain confidence and get really familiar with flying kites. On returning home I spent a year making the most of the epic conditions North Wales has to offer and got involved with the awesome kiting scene here which Turbulence Extreme Sports Shop has nurtured. By February 2006, whilst loving North Wales’s windy coast, I felt I needed to warm my bones up a bit. So I headed off to Nyali Beach in Kenya for 2 weeks to meet fab girly kiter Carrie Begg. The spot was awesome and Carrie was great in showing me loads of new tricks. So in the summer of 2006 I decided it was time to ride at different locations with more people so started entering the Amateur competitions on the B.K.S.A. Tour. They were great fun in wicked spots with loads of new people and ended up 2nd overall. AND NOW… So from now on I aim to keep on having as much fun kiting as I can, travelling to more spots and kiting with more people on water and snow! Hope to see you all out there!! |
