Location: Newgale, South Wales

Mission: Big wave session!

After everyone emerged from van’s just before mid day at the party and Alfie managed to get his huge red van out the hole he’d got it stuck in we headed to Newgale.  Was looking good as we sat in the café with super good coffee, mmm, waiting for the tide to give us enough beach to launch.  Really excited about my session, with this beautiful mild day and my old uni friend Oli out to play who I hadn’t got a chance to kite with yet before, I pumped up my 9m Fusion.  But Hoggy broke his fifth line when he’d just got out on his 12m Fusion, so I kindly donated my Fusion bar and pumped up my 7m Atom despite the boys being on 12m and 14m kites!  Think it was around 14-16 knots at this point!  But its forecast to build and I’m optimistic!  Amazingly the 7m was great and I played around in the waves, occasionally venturing further out when the wave sets weren’t quite so massive!  When the big sets were coming through I was content to play in the big flat sections in between the waves and watching Oli and Hoggy getting munched out back!  So headed in as it got dark, popped up to Oli’s flat for a coffee and discuss meeting to do a little snow kiting later in the season then set off on the windey journey home!

Mission: Tokens Expired

Forecast was looking good, the sky looked nice and blue-felt like spring had come round already! Pumped up, launched…. and that’s when it all changed-there was something missing from this pretty little picture-like, the wind! In the more than positive mood I had got myself into I headed for the water telling myself there was just enough.  I guess I had used up all my wind tokens the day before so after a few underpowered runs I decided to call it a day.  Just to confirm that it was my tokens that had ran out I received a lovely text saying the wind had kicked in shortly after I left-thanks for that Ian!!

Mission: Beat the hailstorms!

So Alfie, who makes awesome films and runs AE Productions had rung to say the weekend was looking good down his way with a big swell coming through and cross on winds at Pendine for Saturday.  So Hoggy and I missioned it down in the Bongo arriving at Alfie’s at around 3am ready for an early session on the river outside Alfie’s house before heading to Pendine!  We woke to not a breath of wind on the river; we’d been looking forward to the flat-water session but not that flat!  So back to bed for another hour before heading to Pendine!  We arrived at the beach in a ferocious hailstorm so waited till it had passed then I pumped up the trusty 7m Atom which was a must with these gusty squalls coming through!  Was a good session playing around in the little waves and only got a frozen ice cream head once!  When it went dark we headed back to Alfie’s for shower, supper and Alfie put together a short Angel’s dvd for us in around half an hour!  It should be on the site in a couple of days so keep a look out, loads of action from last summer’s Angel’s events.  After supper we headed to a barn party where a few local bands were playing that Alfie uses in his videos, caught up with Turbulence rider Marizu there and kipped in the vans on the farm, awesome and muddy!!

Loaction: Newborough

Mission: to surf and surf and surf some more (finally)

The day dawned bright and early, with blue skies and sunshine, and a hurricane forecast.  It looked promising from my bedroom window and I couldn’t wait to get out.  Zoe came round early and after a very quick coffee we started to pack up the van hoping for a blast down at west shore.  Just as we were about to set off Carl appeared and informed us that there wasn’t even a puff of air down at westy, so we should stop for another coffee instead.  However this news didn’t really dampen our spirits, and after a quick meeting in the middle of the road we decided to head out for newborough anyway in the vain hope that it might be a bit breezy there.

Well we couldn’t have planned it better ;-).  Bright sunshine, blue skies, big waves and wind (and plenty of it yippee).  We quickly got changed and pumped up remembering that the already gusty 25 knots were going to build throughout the day.  We both had a fantastic time on the water even with the 100ft waves threatening to pummel our heads and swallow our boards never to be seen again.  Zoe was doing some awesome jumps and carving through some enormous waves and looked fantastic.  I was just happy to be out in the water at last ripping up and down and occasionally getting somersaulted in the waves and even getting some air ;-).  Debs was down with the camera and even though the sun was in the wrong place got some good shots so take a look at the gallery if you can.  When it eventually got too windy even for zo’s little 7m atom we headed for hot chocolate to defrost ourselves from the inside out, before the leisurely drive back to turbulence for coffee (yes we do live off it ;-)).  Can’t wait for next week end ;-)

Mission:

Arrived at Newbrough to find an unusually empty car park! There was only one other kiter on the beach so Sheryl n I quickly got rigged and out on the water.  The wind was strong and straight onshore and I felt like I was white water rafting a lot of the time but todays session certainly got my adrenalin going and was a lot of fun! There were some decent waves-biggest I’ve seen since Watergate Bay but still only half that size!  Forecast looking great for tomorrow, wonder if I’ll be able to have another try at my backloops!

Mission: Wind Chaser

Had a million coffees in the shop this morning whilst waiting for the wind to swing westerly as forecast……it didn’t so we decided to go to Newbrough and see what the wind was doing there, nothing happening there so drove over to Rhosseniger, there was a kitesurfing couple carrying a kite up the beach which had been torn in half-apparently their second today! Ben was just packing up and said the wind had been all over the place and had just gone westerly so I asked Lukas if we would make it back to West Shore before the tide was too far out, we did but there was only about 10knts, however it was gusting to around 13knts occasionally! Whooo! I had an hour just riding up n down the channel until the day light faded and I couldn’t feel my toes. When I got to the van Katie (Chick of the month) pulled up, she had her cast of today so we went over to Sheryl’s for a few celebratory drinks.  Sheryl had made a banquet of food so we sat round a big dining table and ate and drank and drank some more

Mission: Update the masses

I know that no-one has heard from me yet but that's because I seem to have my priorities all wrong.  Have had to work for the last 14 days (aargh!) and have to work for the next week too (I'm supposed to be a teacher with all the time off on the planet!)  Anyway my poor kite thinks its lines have been cut, and my board thinks it's been bad.  It's been so long since I got out I can't remember how to set my lines up!  I feel like I'm missing out on some good riding, what with Zoe starting to do back loops and Jo being out there in all winds!  just about managing to get my fix, read a couple of mags and did a bit of trip planning but counting down the days till the weekend when I will without a doubt be getting out to play (yippee) must, must, must have wind as I have a new board to try and Zo reckons if I don't get out soon she's gonna take it out before me-with friends like that who need enemies J hope everyone else is having fun......4 days to go....

Mission:  High Wind Session

The forecast looked lovely 16 to 22knts and the sky was blue, to good to be true…..Yep, certainly was, it was actually gusting 15 to 40knts!  Having stood watching to many times lately I decided I was going to give it a go, I don’t usually go out in these conditions but had confidence in the 7m Atom Johara had pumped up for me as a gentle persuasion.  I carefully launched it ensuring I kept it nice and low as I got to the water, I wasn’t getting dragged and the kite was nice and stable.  Once on the water I felt fine and had a fun little session so was glad I went out. Didn’t even get my hair wet today J Still not had the conditions I want to have another go at my backloops though but have watched the DVD and think Ive sussed it now soon see.

Location: Rhosneigr

Mission: It’s gonna be HOWLIN

So Zoe had headed to a secret spot super early, I decided it had to be a Rhosneigr session with Hoggy, Ali and Marizu.  The forecast was for it to be building all day until it went completely ballistic late afternoon!  So took my mum and dogs for a nice blustery day out!  As I was setting up Zoe thankfully arrived to say hello after their early morning mission to save my life as I’d forgotten my gloves so I stole hers and Adam turned up to take some pics!  So I headed out on the 7m Atom surprise surprise as the boys were already hanging on to their 9m kites and it was set to build!  Feeling quite brave I went for a massive front loop down loop (possibly because Adam had the camera out!) but baled on the landing as the water was coming towards me quite quickly!  Ouch!  So after that and a couple of unsuccessful unhooking attempts as the wind carried on building I just went for some super fun jumps and a play in the big waves in the middle of the bay dodging millions of windsurfers.  One run was quite bizarre as I was cruising along a wave I heard the thunder of a windsurfer hurtling along behind me and my manager stormed passed with a grin on his face.  Bizarre!  Luckily it was a day off and I hadn’t pulled a sicky!  After a while I was very aware that the boys were stood on the beach and, having been blown off their 9m kites, were now on the prowl for my 7m Atom!  So I sauntered in and let them take turns!  When they were done I was about to head out again when I saw a black wall of cloud heading our way.  So I took the sensible option and packed up with the others.  I was very pleased I had when it hit 10 mins later and so was my mum! Well an awesome session and a careful drive home not to get blown off the A55!

Was up at 06.30am today as forecast was saying it was going pretty ballistic by lunch.  Went to a secret spot with Lukas, Adam, Thompson and Ian!  Had a wicked session today,  nicely powered and neat little waves to play on.  I came in for a rest and Lukas stole my kite-don’t know what it is with these boys steeling my kite, reckon it’s the colour!!!

Location: Jo’s mum’s house and West Shore
Mission:

We fueled up properly for the 40knts at Westshore with mango and banana followed by Johara’s Mums porridge!  Ready for action and full of energy we headed to the beach.  There were a group of around 10 hardened kitesurfers quivering behind the wall from the bitter cold howling winds!  Obviously not had their porridge today!! Jo was quick to pump her beloved 7m Atom before Martyn or Ali could steal it!  Realising he wasn’t getting his hands on the Atom, Ali went out his brand new 9m type 8 RRD, rather powered,he had been on the water aprox. 3 seconds when he pulled one of his sick big airs which took him right across the bay!  He quickly landed the kite and decided it would be better to wait his turn on Jo’s Atom.  So the 7m Atom ruled the rest of the day with the row of spectators behind the wall wishing they had one! Zoe sensibly remained with the spectators and then sidled off to the shop for a coffee with Chick of the Month Katie!  Jo continued her fully maxed out session taking it in turns with Ali and Hoggy on the 7m till the fingers froze!  Oh yes, and there was snow on the mountain tops today!

I received a full report on the Angel Trip Abroad from the night before which I was gutted to miss as I was at Spanish class!  The Trip is looking fantastic! Watch this space!  While Angel Zoe spent a super productive day on the computer working on the Trip I tried for a quick session at West Shore as the tide went out.  Have been loving my 7m Atom session so much recently I tried to tell myself it was windy enough for the 7 but it blatantly was 12m weather, so stole Hoggy’s!!  Didn’t last long though as wind died and my feet froze!  So upset, it’s officially booty weatherL!

Mission: Looking For My Landing

I was nervous but excited on the journey to the beach today as I was mentally preparing myself to do a successful backloop.  I was going through each stage of the move in my head.  When I arrived to the beach there wasn’t much wind but I waited around for a while and it picked up!  It was sunny and the sand bar had just come through giving me some lovely flat water to play on, needless to say I had a wicked session.   At first I was a bit powered to try a new trick, or that’s my excuse anyway, but the wind dropped a little to the end of the session so it was time to give it a go,  trying to run all the different advice I’ve had through my head, I popped, span, looked for my landing and……..landed on my ass!  Still had my board on my feet n was facing the right direction so I must have been even closer that time! I only tried twice today as I’m unsure what I’m doing wrong so I’m gonna watch the Progression DVD, I think its one of two things, I either haven’t got my kite high enough or I’m not bending my legs enough through the spin, will try again when I work out what I’m doing wrong.  Got the girls coming over tonight to look at the Sardinia trip, so will hopefully have some more info on that soon.

Mission: Johara’s Coaching Mission

I’m still buzzin now!  After standing on the beach for a couple of sessions watching Johara have all the fun due to the mental conditions and me not being brave/mental enough to go out, the wind finally settled and delivered a nice 14 to 18knt day.  I was on the water when Jo arrived, she was immediately in coach mode as she stood on shore shouting instructions to me, to scared not to follow her instructions I tried a Pop Transition, Ok that was easy enough, Jo realised that wasn’t pushing me enough so started instructing me on how to do a backloop ‘just pop, look over your shoulder and look for your landing’ now this one sounded a little more complicated to me, picking up speed I dug my edge in ready to pop…..aarrgh! lost my bottle, OK gotta do it next time as she’s still there shouting ‘Backloop! Backloop’ Well, the first one went ok, I kinda bottled it half way through but did spin under the kite, think the fact I had my eyes shut may well have had a slight effect on the fact I didn’t land it!  Didn’t loop or ditch the kite though so that made me feel more confident.  My next two attempts were pretty much the same only I wasn’t as scared so kept my eyes open-I can see the board is still high as I’m half way round but didn’t land either of them, I’m almost there after three attempts so I reckon my next session is going to be dedicated to completing the Backloop mission.

Mission: Cling on again!

Met with Angel Zoe on Location and sat a squall out in the van watching a lamp post sway in front of us and discussing our next weekend mission in December with the Arctic Foxes.  After the squall passes we decide to logo Zoe’s car up with pinkstickers I’d been preparing while we decide on a plan of action.  Mean while my ‘pole-dancing’ (windsurfing!!) boss turns up and challenges us to go out.  So out comes the 7m Atom to go for a play in 30+knts yet again!  A good session is had, loving the de-power and lift on the Atom! But the wind continued to build and Zoe decided to call it quits again and went back to the Turbulence HQ to drink coffee and dream of a steady 20knts in a warm country!

Perfect West Shore session, about 20knts Westerly and the tide coming in for early afternoon.  Zoe fully completed her mission and kited all day and was starting to pull off some good jumps until Hoggy stole her pink RRD Hyper Type!!  Photos will be available!  I had a good shortish session until I crawled home with exhaustion from the epic conditions North Wales can throw at you!

Mission: CLING to the 7m Atom!

I had a well deserved lie in after a couple of beers, Angel Zoe kept up to date with our Angel admin and poor Angel Sheryl has to work all weekendL.  Zoe and I head to West Shore, our fav, super local spot, as the tide comes in, lovely!  However all but 2 of the guys were quivering in their boots behind the wall because someone’s windmeter had read 65knts!! No way!!  So after only a small amount of faffing I decide that the 7m Atom will be fine!  And it was, despite the super gusty conditions it was still a really enjoyable session taking it in turns with Hoggy.  I even looked so cold stood on the beach waiting for my turn that a lovely old couple offered me a dash of Whisky from their hip flask! Bless! Poor Zoe yet again opted for the sensible option of staying on the beach, sensible girl.

Mission: Hunt down non-gusty, kiteable spot

After being a tad late to meet Angel Zoe at the Turbulence HQ we set off on the mission of the day.  As we headed to our chosen secret spot of the day we planned missions abroad to warmer climates!  Pulling up at the secret spot we discovered that Hoggy had given up as the wind had swung in the wrong direction for the spot.  So we jumped back in the Bongo, fuelled up with half a PB&J sandwich each and headed for option no.2, Newborough on Anglesey.  Getting a proper sand blast as we ran to the beach to check out the conditions we decided the only option was to take it in turns on the super-depowerable 7m Flexifoil Atom.  I was first up to test the conditions and loved popping off the 3rd wave on the way out!  Zoe took pics until she was bored of my repetitive 3rd wave jump!  A huge squall came through just as I landed the Atom and we decided to call it a day, poor ZoeL!  Back to Adam’s aka ‘Charlie’ for some more work on the website and a quick visit to Angel Sheryl’s for a sneak preview at her progress on a pink UK weather map!!

Arrived at West Shore around 09.30am, Johara was getting changed so I got to show off my new wellies! she loves them and we have planned a shoping trip to get some similar for her.  Adam from Turbulence and the Flexifoil team were already out playing on the new portotypes and judging by their faces loving it!  Johara had most of her session on a little proto which she had loads of fun with.  We decided to have a lunch break at high tide, the boys all got changed and went off but Johara and I decided it would be much easier to jump in the car in our wetsuits and grab coffee and lunch by the heater in the Turbulence shop.  Johara was nearly out of diesel AGAIN so had to stop at the petrol station in her wetsuit harness n all!  After lunch it was back on the water for the afternoon session.

Coffee whilst checking the weather forcast on the internet was disappointing this morning as the forcast had promised a good few days like yesterday but it was only showing 5knts, don’t you just hate it when that happens?!  Then I got a great phone call telling me it was 15knts at the beach, I phoned Johara, said I had a few things to do but would be there soon as I could.  I arrived to blue sky and two Flexifoil Fusions out on the water but as I got closer I realised the wind had obviously dropped and Johara and Hoggy were out on big kites and skim/surf boards.  Charlie and the R&D Team arrived to the beach shortly after me wanting to test some new toys out, we stayed on the beach chatting in the sunshine for a while, fantastic news-Charlie announced to Johara that Flexifoil would like to sponsor her!! I dont know whos smile was bigger, hers or mine! Im really made up for her.

Johara n I went to Turbulence HQ for coffe and to bug Lukas.

Mission: Heavy Traffic

The forcast had been promising a good West Shore Sunday, but you know what forcasts are like, so I was happy to receive my early morning phone call from the beach confirming it was looking good.  I received the call at 07.30am and was told there were already a few riders out on the water.   Soon as I got on the water I had a big smile on my face, the conditions were great although there was heavy traffic on the water but with a lot of top class riders out, there was an order which everyone was followed and it was an excerlent session.  It was great to be kiteing with the likes of Hoggy, Ibby and Ali, watching them pull off their sickest tricks, whilst out practising your own.  We were on the water from 09.00am until 14.30pm, we got changed, went to the beach café for a coffee then went to the other end of the beach for a play on the land with my daughter Leionnie, who is 9 years old she has just started buggying and had her first go at land boarding which she did very well, so it was a great day for all.

Mission: Turbulence Team trials

Its no secret that all three Angels have a bit of a thing for coffee, so naturally that’s how the morning started!

We were split into teams and had some great team building tasks to do which turned out to be a lot of fun.  We designed shields which had to represent each team members individuality and include a team motto, there were wings and halo’s to represent the Angels.

To set the scene a little, there was Adam aka Simon, Ibby aka Louis and Mike Shaw aka Sharon, sat at a table (in true Xfactor style!) name tags and all. We had prepared a presentation for the panel which included our goals and plans for 2007.   We got a ‘YES’ from all three!

The day was enjoyable and extremely informative. We finsihed around 15.30 and headed straight to the beach as we couldn't help but notice throughout the day that the wind was blowing. Unfortunaetly someone had pulled the plug out and the water was a long way out. Johara quickly pumped up her Flexifoil Fusion and did the 20 min walk for a beautiful sunset session.
